Joy of Being Curious

Sometimes we encounter situations that make us uncomfortable. We may be a bit anxious or a fearful. Unknown and novel situations can do that. Maybe it happens when you are at an event where you don’t know anyone or maybe when you are starting a new job. It could be when you are participating in an activity that you’ve never done before or find yourself in a cultural situation different than the culture you are used to.

When we feel threatened, we can become defensive. We may attack others, make fun of the situation, or become angry with ourselves. We may judge ourselves for not being more knowledgeable or more prepared. Perhaps you don’t do either, but withdraw and pull away. Maybe you avoid situations where you would meet new people or be in unfamiliar situations.

A skill that is helpful is simply to be curious. Accept what you don’t know, that  it is a new situation, and that’s kind of cool. You can be curious. Instead of focusing on your discomfort or how others might be judging you, be curious about other people and/or the situation itself. Learning about new people may lead to interesting conversations and perhaps new friends. Learning about new situations can add pleasure to your life.

The words, “I’m curious…” show interest and willingness to know. They can be helpful in starting conversations.
