Audience

This conference will provide a forum for professionals, family members, and consumers to better understand the issues pertaining to diagnosis and treatment of adolescents with borderline personality disorder. In addition, there will be panels to discuss questions from the audience.

Course Description

Clinicians remain reluctant in making the diagnosis of BPD in people younger than 18. Nevertheless, making the diagnosis in adolescents who struggle with symptoms of BPD is validating to the adolescent, means the possibility of targeted early intervention, reduces the risk of unnecessary medication trials, and allows for empirically validated treatments to be used.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this program are to advance the understanding of professionals, families, and consumers about the complexities of borderline personality as they pertain to adolescents. At the conclusion of the conference, conference attendees will be better able to:

• Identify the nature and course of BPD in adolescents
• Recognize the role of and advances in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in treating adolescents with BPD
• Understand the role of family involvement in the treatment of these adolescents
• Understand co-morbid psychiatric conditions as they impact treatment
• Understand the role of trauma and PTSD, its influence on the course of BPD and how it influences treatment.
• Describe the role of various placement options when living at home does not work.
