Family Connections™ is a free evidence-based 12-session course that meets weekly to provide education, skills training, and support for people who are in a relationship with someone who has emotional dysregulation or BPD. It is hosted in a community setting and led by trained group leaders who are usually family members of loved ones with emotion dysregulation.

At this time, all courses meet virtually via Zoom video conferencing. Because of the pandemic, in-person meetings will resume as determined by recommendations of health officials.

PLEASE NOTE: If a course is not offered in your community, by default you will be offered a Family Connections™ Virtual  (FCV) course.

    Has your relative engaged in a suicide attempt, self-injurious behavior, or other high-risk behavior that you experienced as very stressful or traumatic and is currently impacting you and/or your family?*




    To place you in the appropriate program, count the number of statements that are currently true to you:

    1. I have upsetting thoughts, nightmares, or memories about my relative’s life-threatening behavior.
    2. I try hard not to think or talk about it, or I go out of my way to avoid situations that remind me of my relative’s life-threatening behavior.

    5. I feel guilty or am unable to stop blaming myself or others for the incident and/or the problems that the incident has caused.

    You may request to take a course with up to 2 family members. Every person needs to apply individually for FC and also reply to our invitation to enroll individually. We can not guarantee that your request will be accommodated as courses are filled first-come, first-serve.

    Family Connections™ Participant Code of Conduct

    Family Connections™ (FC) is taught in a confidential, supportive environment conducive to learning skills to support your relationship with a person with BPD or its symptoms, including emotion dysregulation. Our code of conduct is the standard through which we honor and respect the needs of our participants and co-leaders. To enroll in a Family Connections™ course, we ask that you agree to abide by our code of conduct.

    What we ask of you as a NEABPD Family Connections™ program participant:

    • Maintain the confidentiality of all participants by not discussing their personal information and situations outside the program. Please don’t allow people who are not registered participants to listen in to the zoom session. Participants share personal histories and issues concerning themselves, their families and the person with BPD they love. No recordings are permitted.
    • Attend class with an open mind and an open heart. Plan to attend all 12 classes since each class builds on the previous one. Weekly engagement also increases trust and reinforces skills. Please respect the experiences and feelings of each participant and honor their time to share.
    • Provide an atmosphere of support and non-judgment so that others will feel comfortable sharing. All of us have different experiences with people who suffer from BPD.
    • Take care of yourself. You may experience moments that are especially upsetting to you. These feelings may come from a number of sources--from recounting past experiences or sharing a recent interaction with your person with BPD, from your current life stressors, or from hearing another participant’s sharing. If you need additional support or if your current situation could benefit from more than what the course can provide, your leaders can direct you to additional resources.
    • Take from the program the information and skills that you believe are most helpful for you.
    • Refrain from any endorsement or promotion of individuals, groups, or businesses in which you have a personal or financial interest in as this is not allowed.
